Have you ever got a tool and on your way home asked yourself “when am I ever going to use this?” But then a couple of days later find yourself in a situation where you don’t know how you lived without it for so long? This is the situation I found myself in. I received the new gear wrench X drive pin-less universal joint for sockets. When I got them I was super excited. I thought this is great! Then I was like.... hmmm I’ve never really needed them before, how am I going to test and review these? I’ve used a universal joint in the past but they were always such a pain that I never bothered to buy a set. Well ironically two days after receiving these I needed them. And not just in the it would make my job easier but I could use something else, but in the it’s the only way to do it way. The application I found myself in was an impossible to see and get to starter on my dads 2001 Saturn. It looked like I was going to have to dismantle half the car to get to one bolt because there was zero clearance for any tool. Then I remembered my friends over at Gearwrench had given me the new universal joint. And let me tell you it performed exceptionally well. Because it is pin-less it has a much smoother movement than its counterparts. Most of the other styles I have tried look like they can turn farther but then have catches that they have to “roll over”. These however work on the principles of a ball joint and are smooth all around. They offer 30* of angle with complete rotation all the way around. The X-drive means you have virtually no power loss or slip which is especially useful in those tight places where you can barely use your ratchet. Overall I am pleased with this product. It works exactly as advertised and I look forward to trying more from Gearwrench.
